Charity Cricket Day in Melton Mowbray raises £14,000 for The Prostate Cancer Charity

Sunday's Charity Cricket Day at Egerton Park Cricket Club in Melton Mowbray raised around £14,000 for The Prostate Cancer Charity. Hundreds turned out for the event, which was organised by Howzat Travel and former England cricketer Tim Munton - whose father Alan died of prostate cancer last year.

The event featured a number of cricketing legends including:

  • Jonathan Agnew - the 'voice of cricket' from BBC's Test Match Special
  • Matthew Hoggard - Leicestershire captain and former England player
  • Devon Malcolm - Former England bowler
  • Tim Munton - Former England bowler
  • Claude Henderson - Leicestershire spin bowler and former South Africa player

The highlight of the day was a Twenty20 match between a Howzat Travel team - including Matthew Hoggard and Devon Malcolm - and a team from Egerton Park Cricket Club.

Howzat Travel batted first and scored 139 for 5 - including 42 from Devon Malcolm. Top scorer with 50 was Alex Sears from Sleaford.

Egerton Park bowler Claude Henderson had figures of 4 overs 1 wicket for 10 runs and Tim Munton had figures of 4 overs 1 wicket for 26 runs. Local player Tom Barnard had figures of 2 overs 1 wicket for 17 runs and Andrew Keightley bowled 1 over, getting 1 wicket for 6 runs.

In reply Egerton Park scored 136 for 4 in their 20 overs. Top scorer was local player Eddie Cham who was 49 not out.

Matthew Hoggard's bowling figures were 4 overs 1 wicket for 28 runs and Devon Malcolm bowled 2 overs, getting 1 wicket for 14 runs.

Tim Munton rounded off the day by thanking everyone for coming along and reminding them about the need to raise awareness of the disease:

  • "We've had a lot of fun today and we've raised a lot of money."

    "On a serious note - if you've a man over 50 and you've got waterworks problems - go to the doctors and get a test - if they catch Prostate Cancer early enough it can be sorted out."
