The George Hotel, 8 High Street, Melton Mowbray

The George is a Grade II listed building once a 17th century coaching inn and is still very much part of the history of Melton. The owners 'Marston's Inns and Taverns' submitted a planning application to Melton Borough Council on the 21st February 2011. This was to convert the George Hotel into flats and Shops. It is a relief that they withdrew this application on the 8th April 2011. The conversion would have altered its historic features and they would have been lost forever. If 'Marston's Inns and Taverns' do not want to reopen it is there not anyone who would like make an offer to them with the intention of upgrading it into a quality hotel to cater for the increasing tourist trade in Melton. According to the 'Melton Times' tourist visitor numbers increased dramatically from eight per cent in 2009 to 30 per cent last year, the highest of all the other Leicestershire towns. I call upon all residents of Melton Mowbray. Keep an eye on 'Marston's Inns and Taverns'. Let's not let them destroy part of Melton's heritage.
The very sad looking George Hotel
